We’re closing for business in solidarity with #GlobalClimateStrike

EIT Climate-KIC will close this Friday 20 September*, the day of the Global Climate Strike.

Our phones will be down, our emails will be auto-responding and our website will flag our decision to close for the day in solidarity with student strikers.

Since its inception, EIT Climate-KIC’s mission has been to use the power of public-private innovation partnerships to stimulate solutions, build capabilities and mobilise a community of students and professionals for climate action. The work we do to shift the world towards a net-zero future is important, but it’s not enough. To change everything, everyone has to work together.

That’s why the student-led Global Climate Strike, happening three days before the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit in New York, is set to be a historic turning point in the fight against climate change. With strikes planned in 120 countries around the world, it’s predicted to be the largest day of climate action in global history. Millions of people will be striking together to voice collective concern over the climate emergency, asking that governments do more. This critical mass of participants signals that public opinion is shifting: The need for appropriate action in line with climate science has become the human rights issue of our time.

As an organisation, we value democracy as a crucial tool for radical and just systems transformation. This unprecedented level of citizen engagement inspires us and gives us hope for what lies ahead. We stand in solidarity with the strikers.

If we want a future that works for everyone, we have to make our voices heard. We made the decision to close our doors this Friday to give our colleagues across Europe the chance to demonstrate the importance of peaceful citizen engagement on climate. We invite you to join us and pledge your support to those participating in the Global Climate Strike by closing your business.

*In Austria and Switzerland, EIT Climate-KIC will close on the following Friday, the 27th of September.
